WHAT IS GLOBAL WARMING?
Carbon dioxide and other gases warm the surface of the planet naturally by trapping solar heat in the atmosphere. This is a good thing because it keeps our planet habitable. However, by burning fossil fuels such as coal, gas and oil and clearing forests we have dramatically increased the amount of carbon dioxide in the Earth’s atmosphere and temperatures are rising.
The vast majority of scientists agree that global warming is real, it’s already happening and that it is the result of our activities and not a natural occurrence.1 The evidence is overwhelming and undeniable.
We’re already seeing changes. Glaciers are melting, plants and animals are being forced from their habitat, and the number of severe storms and droughts is increasing.
 |
The number of Category 4 and 5 hurricanes has almost doubled in the last 30 years.2 |
 |
Malaria has spread to higher altitudes in places like the Colombian Andes, 7,000 feet above sea level.3 |
 |
The flow of ice from glaciers in Greenland has more than doubled over the past decade.4 |
 |
At least 279 species of plants and animals are already responding to global warming, moving closer to the poles.5 |
If the warming continues, we can expect catastrophic consequences.
 |
Deaths from global warming will double in just 25 years -- to 300,000 people a year.6 |
 |
Global sea levels could rise by more than 20 feet with the loss of shelf ice in Greenland and Antarctica, devastating coastal areas worldwide.7 |
 |
Heat waves will be more frequent and more intense. |
 |
Droughts and wildfires will occur more often. |
 |
The Arctic Ocean could be ice free in summer by 2050.8 |
 |
More than a million species worldwide could be driven to extinction by 2050.9 |
There is no doubt we can solve this problem. In fact, we have a moral obligation to do so. Small changes to your daily routine can add up to big differences in helping to stop global warming. The time to come together to solve this problem is now – TAKE ACTION
Posted by Emey on Feb 19, '07 8:44 AM for everyone a reminder Received
from a friend who is in the property Insurance business. It is well
worth reading. This is One of those emails that if you didn't send it,
rest assured someone on your list will suffer for not reading it.
The original message was
written by a lady whose brother and his wife learned a hard lesson this past week. Their house burned down.. ..nothing left but ashes. They have good insurance so the house will be replaced and most of the contents. That is the good news. However, they were sick when they found out the cause of the fire. The insurance investigator sifted through the ashes for several hours. He had the cause of the fire traced to the master bathroom. He asked her
sister-in-law what she had plugged in the bathroom. She listed the
normal things.... curling iron, blow dryer. He kept saying to her, "No,
this would be something that would disintegrate at high temperatures".
Then her sister-in-law remembered she had a Glade Plug-In, in the bathroom. The investigator had one of those "Aha" moments. He said that was the cause of the fire. He said he has seen more house fires started with the plug-in type room fresheners than anything else. He said the
plastic they are made from is THIN plastic. He also said that in every case there was nothing left to prove that it even existed.
When the investigator looked in the wall plug, the two prongs left from the plug-in were
still in there. Her sister-in-law had one of the plug-ins that had a
small night light built in it. She said she had noticed that the light
would dim and then finally go out. She would walk into the bathroom a
few hours later, and the light would be back on again. The investigator
said that the unit was getting too hot, and would dim and go out rather
than just blow the light bulb. Once it cooled down it would come back
on.
That is a warning sign . The investigator said he
personally wouldn't have any type of plug in fragrance device anywhere
in his house. He has seen too many places that have been burned down
due to them.
PLEASE PASS THIS ON TO ALL THE PEOPLE IN YOUR ADDRESS BOOK. NOT ONLY COULD IT SAVE SOMEONE'S
HOUSE, BUT IT COULD SAVE SOMEONE'S LIFE !!

Brace for severe storms
YELLOW ALERT: Seven northern and east coast states are bracing
for thunderstorms, heavy rain and possible floods as strong winds may
develop into a cyclone. Severe weather is expected to hit these states
from today till Monday. (The Star) Current strong northeast
monsoon winds of 65kph
may worsen.
Six-metre waves expected
on the east coast
Waves may reach three to
four metres in northern
parts of the Straits of
Malacca.
Fishermen, ferry
operators and sailors on
small vessels advised not
to go to sea.
Police, fire and rescue
department and the
National Security
Department are on
stand-by.
|
Be prepared: Fire and Rescue Department Kelantan director Yahya Madis (far left) and some firemen
double-checking the readiness of a boat for flood operations yesterday. |
KUALA LUMPUR: Seven states in the northern and east coast regions of
the peninsula have been issued with a yellow alert warning of
thunderstorms and strong winds over the weekend.
A “tropical depression” (or cyclone) is also expected to hit Perlis,
Kedah, Penang and Perak in the north, and Kelantan, Terengganu and
Pahang in the east.
The Science, Innovation and Technology Ministry warned that the
northern states would see scattered rain becoming widespread and heavy
from tomorrow until Monday.
The east coast states, on the other hand, would see widespread moderate to heavy rain from today to Monday.
Other states in the peninsula are likely to experience moderate rain during the same period.
There would also be moderate rain in most parts of Sarawak until tomorrow, and in most parts of Sabah until Sunday.
The yellow alert denotes the possibility of incoming wet weather, an
orange alert existing heavy rainfall that is normal during the monsoon
season but not serious, and a red alert widespread heavy rain.
In issuing the yellow alert, the ministry also warned residents to brace themselves for possible floods.
Deputy Minister Datuk Kong Cho Ha said fishermen in the east coast had been advised not to go out to sea during this period.
“The storm is expected to bring heavy rainfall and the people should be
prepared for severe weather. The seas would be rough and the conditions
will be dangerous for small boats,” he told reporters at Wisma MCA here
yesterday.
Kong said the leaders of the respective states as well as the police,
fire and rescue departments and the national security department in the
Prime Minister’s Department had been told to be on stand-by in case of
floods.
“The current strong northeast monsoon winds of 65kph are expected to develop into a cyclone,” he said.
Stormy weather is expected in the west and the middle of Peninsular Malaysia by today, he warned.
“We can forecast heavy rain, but it is not possible to predict the
amount of rainfall and the exact areas that would be affected,” he
said.
“Therefore, we can’t say for sure if floods will occur. But we want people to be on stand-by for evacuation.”

If the population of the Earth was reduced to that of a small town with 100 people, it would look something like this:
57% Asians
21% Europeans
14% Americans (northern and southern)
8% Africans
52% women 48% men
70% coloured-skins 30% caucasians
89% heterosexuals 11% homosexuals
6 people would own 59% of the whole world wealth and all of them will be from the United States of America
80% would have bad living conditions
70% would be uneducated
50%
underfed
1 would die
2 would be born
1 would have a computer
1 (only one) will have higher education
When you look at the world from this point of view, you can see there is a real need for solidarity, understanding, patience and education.
Also think about the following -
This morning, if you woke up healthy, then you are happier than the 1 million people that will not survive next week.
If you never suffered a war,the loneliness of the jail cell, the agony of torture,or hunger, you are happier than 500 million people in the world.
If you can enter into a church / mosque without
fear of jail or death, you are happier then 3 million people in the world.
If there is a food in your fridge, you have shoes and clothes, you have bed and a roof, you are richer then 75% of the people in the world.
If you have bank account, money in your wallet and some coins in the money-box,you belong to the 8% of the people on the world, who are well-to-do.
If you read this you are three times blessed because:
1. somebody just thought of you.
2 . you don't belong to the 200 million people that cannot read.
3 . and... you have a computer!
As somebody once
said:
" - Work as if you don't need money, - Love as if you've never been hurt, - Dance, as if nobody can see you, - Sing, as if no one can hear, - Live, as if the Earth was a heaven."

Mentos + Pop = Fun Words cannot begin to describe the awesome eruption that is created from adding Mentos candies to a 2-liter bottle of soda. The eruption is enormous... and so is the learning if you consider the chemistry.
Materials:
A roll or box of Mentos (candy mints) and a 2-liter bottle of diet soda. Either diet or regular soda will work for this experiment, but diet soda is less sticky when you're cleaning it up!
Experiment:
- This activity is probably best done outside in the middle of an abandoned field, or better yet, on a huge lawn.
- Carefully open the bottle of soda. Position the bottle on the ground so that it will not tip over.
- Unwrap the whole roll of Mentos. The goal is to drop all of the Mentos into the bottle of soda at the same time (which is trickier than it looks). One method for doing this is to roll a piece of paper into a tube just big enough to hold the loose Mentos. You'll want to be able to position the tube directly over the mouth of the bottle so that all of the candies drop into the bottle at the same time.
- Don't drop them into the bottle just yet! Warn the spectators to stand back. Okay, you're going to drop all of the Mentos into the bottle at the same time and then get truckin' (move out of the way... so long... bye- bye... hasta la vista!)
- It's just like fireworks on the 4th of July. The spectators erupt, of course, in a chorus of ooohs and ahhhs. Someone yells out, "Do it again" and you do.
How Does It Work:
Here's the question of the day... Why do Mentos mixed with soda produce this incredible eruption? You should know that there is considerable debate over how and why this works. While we offer the most probable explanations below, we also understand and admit that other explanation could be possible... and we welcome your thoughts.
As you probably know, soda pop is basically sugar (or diet sweetener), flavoring, water and preservatives. The thing that makes soda bubbly is invisible carbon dioxide gas, which is pumped into bottles at the bottling factory using tons of pressure. Until you open the bottle and pour a glass of soda, the gas mostly stays suspended in the liquid and cannot expand to form more bubbles, which gases naturally do. But there's more...
If you shake the bottle and then open it, the gas is released from the protective hold of the water molecules and escapes with a whoosh, taking some of the soda along with it. What other ways can you cause the gas to escape? Just drop something into a glass of soda and notice how bubbles immediately form on the surface of the object. For example, adding salt to soda causes it to foam up because thousands of little bubbles form on the surface of each grain of salt.
Many scientists, including Lee Marek, claim that the Mentos phenomenon is a physical reaction, not a chemical one. Water molecules strongly attract each other, linking together to form a tight mesh around each bubble of carbon dioxide gas in the soda. In order to form a new bubble, or even to expand a bubble that has already formed, water molecules must push away from each other. It takes extra energy to break this "surface tension." In other words, water "resists" the expansion of bubbles in the soda.
When you drop the Mentos into the soda, the gelatin and gum arabic from the dissolving candy break the surface tension. This disrupts the water mesh, so that it takes less work to expand and form new bubbles. Each Mentos candy has thousands of tiny pits all over the surface. These tiny pits are called nucleation sites - perfect places for carbon dioxide bubbles to form. As soon as the Mentos hit the soda, bubbles form all over the surface of the candy. Couple this with the fact that the Mentos candies are heavy and sink to the bottom of the bottle and you've got a double-whammy. When all this gas is released, it literally pushes all of the liquid up and out of the bottle in an incredible soda blast. You can see a similar effect when cooking potatoes or pasta are lowered into a pot of boiling water. The water will sometimes boil over because organic materials that leach out of the cooking potatoes or pasta disrupt the tight mesh of water molecules at the surface of the water, making it easier for bubbles and foam to form.
When a scoop of ice cream is added to root beer, the "float" foams over for essentially the same reason. The surface tension of the root beer is lowered by gums and proteins from the melting ice cream, and the CO2 bubbles expand and release easily, creating a beautiful foam on top
Next question... Why should you use diet Coke or diet Pepsi? The simple answer is that diet soda just works better than regular soda. Some people speculate that it has something to do with the artifical sweetner, but the verdict is still out. More importantly, diet soda does not leave a sticky mess to have to clean up. Hey, that's important.
What's the record for the biggest Mentos fountain? My official record is a 18 foot blast that shot up and almost took out a half million dollar, high-definition television camera. You'll find video on-line at www.SteveSpanglerScience.com of some of our favorite eruptions.
On a personal note... I've performed this demonstration well over a thousand times - on television, talk shows, science conventions, teacher associations, for CEO's at huge motivational speaking rallies, for Nobel Prize winners and anyone else who might watch. And the reaction is always the same... that's amazing! My thanks to Lee Marek who originally shared the Mentos idea with me and to the hundreds of teachers and science enthusiasts who continue to share their funny pictures, videos and experiences.

1. A Livable Income More than half the Earth's 6 billion people subsist on less than RM 7.60 a day. Proven policies, such as micro-enterprise development, access to credit, and investment in education and training, increase income.
|
2. Food for Everyone In poor nations, malnutrition stunts four of every 10 children. Yet the world is capable of feeding itself. Increased production of food crops, investment in rural infrastructure, better food distribution and land reform are among the measures that reduce hunger.
|
3. Primary Education for Everyone More than 130 million children grow up unschooled; another 150 million drop out before standard four. Education is essential to their wellbeing and that of their communities.
|
4. Clean Water Contaminated water accounts for 80 percent of all disease and claims the lives of 5 million children a year. Investment in wells, tanks, water-purifying systems, and reduction of wasted water could secure safe water for everyone.
|
5. Debt Relief for Poor Nations Thirty African nations now spend more on debt payments than education. Canceling unsustainable debt frees up money for basic social services.
|
6. Peace Building War victimises everyone. Eighty percent of the dead are women and children. Innovative reconciliation and development programs can foster co-operation and build peace.
|
7. Equal Opportunity for Girls In all 163 countries studied by the United Nations, men had more advantages than women. Yet the evidence is clear: communities are richer and healthier when girls are valued and treated as well as boys.
|
8. A Sustainable Environment Sound and proven policies can reverse pollution, soil erosion, deforestation, global warming and depletion of natural resources. There can be a renewable and sustainable world.
|
9. An End to Child Exploitation More than 250 million children work as prostitutes, drug traffickers and indentured labourers. Enforcement of laws against child exploitations, a livable family income and consumer education can end this disgrace.
|
10. Freedom to Believe The right of all people to believe and act on their beliefs through full participation in society is fundamental to human wellbeing.
|
| A utopian list? Not at all. The progress that has been made in areas such as immunisation, nutrition, and technology proves that these issues can be resolved. We need to do something. Our voices, our contributions, our involvement in these 10 critical issues will make a difference. The children of the new millennium are depending on us. For more than 3000 projects operating in 89 countries, touching over 75 million lives, World Vision seeks by God's grace to address these 10 urgent issues.
